  1. P-51D BOMBER ESCORT TRAINING

  3. The P-51D Mustang held performance
  4. advantages over both of the aircraft it
  5. met most often in combat.  Because of
  6. the armament carried by Bf 109s on
  7. bomber intercept missions, this
  8. normally agile German fighter was no
  9. match for the Mustang's speed and
  10. maneuverability.  The FW 190, while
  11. having a very fast roll rate, was out-
  12. turned and out-climbed by the P-51D. 
  13. And, although both the 109 and the 190
  14. were better armed than the P-51, the
  15. experience of Mustang pilots outweighed
  16. this factor, especially toward the end 
  17. of the war.

  19.                     YOUR MISSION
  20.  
  21. You are the lone escort for a formation 
  22. of B-17s as they are en route to bomb 
  23. the aircraft engine factory at Kiel.  
  24. Multiple waves of enemy fighters will
  25. attack the bombers before and after
  26. their bombing run.  Stop the enemy 
  27. fighters before they reach the bombers.  
  28. Take advantage of the P-51D's excellent 
  29. visibility to watch the entire sky for 
  30. approaching German interceptors.
